Gastrolyzer Test

BREATH TESTING FOR GUT CONDITIONS AND FOOD INTOLERANCES

This test is available at Remedies B’Kara

The Gastrolyzer®️ consists of a breath analysis monitor that can help to find the cause of your gut discomfort, such as flatulence, bloating and nausea.

A Gastrolyzer®️ breath test is a quick, reliable, non-invasive mode of testing. It works by measuring the level of hydrogen and/or methane on your breath that is produced when your gut breaks down food. Based on the levels of these gases, it can help to determine if you have a condition, such as food intolerance, malabsorption or bacterial overgrowth problem. Once your doctor or dietitian has your hydrogen and/ or methane breath levels, they can advise you how best to treat your condition. This may be through changing your diet, lifestyle, taking medication, or a combination.

Preparation for the breath test

It is important that the patient preparation is followed so that a true baseline reading
can be measured.

Up to four weeks before the breath test:

  • No antibiotics.
  • No stool hardeners or softeners.
  • Avoid pre and probiotics.

24 hours before the breath test:

  • Avoid foods containing grains, dairy, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans.
  • Eat chicken or fish, plain rice, eggs and water.

On the day of the breath test:

  • Fast for 12 hours before the test.
  • No smoking, no chewing candy, no exercise.
  • Clean your teeth two hours prior.

Breath testing process, direct to the monitor:

Provided you have completed the patient preparation, including fasting, you will be
asked to provide an initial breath test. This will be your baseline reading. Once you have
your baseline reading, you will be given a solution to drink.

Then, depending on what condition you are being tested for, you will be asked to follow
a protocol by providing further breath samples at certain times.

Hydrogen & Methane Breath Testing (HMBT)

The bacteria in your gut will produce more hydrogen and/or methane when it is reacting
badly to something you have ingested. A doctor/dietitian can compare your breath
samples after you have drunk the solution to your baseline reading to help find the
problem and advise you on the best course of action.

HMBT with the Gastrolyzer®️ range can help reach a diagnosis for:

  • Sugar intolerances
  • Intolerance of dairy products
  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Investigation of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
